THE LABYRINTH, A HEART IN OUR MIDST.

Having spent our entire lives living in a maze, the first time we walk a labyrinth it almost feels like magic, no dead ends, no confusion, no tricks. Instead, the labyrinth offers us a sacred space that holds and nurtures us, taking us on a gently flowing journey which allows us the time to TRUST and LISTEN to our inner voice, the voice of our hearts. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our children grew up in a place like that.
In this busy world of concepts, challenges, ideas, activities, we never have the time or place to even hear our inner voice never mind trust it. We are taught the game of the maze from early on, developing our minds and the sooner the better it seems, as preschoolers are put into uniforms and taught to read and write earlier and earlier.

So what is a labyrinth?

Firstly, the labyrinth does not belong to the linear world, so in talking or writing about the labyrinth one must be careful. Just as the spiral represents the infinite aspect of ourselves, look up at our galaxy, so does the labyrinth.
Looking at one, the first thing that strikes you is the beauty of the pattern, based on sacred geometry, these patterns have been around since ancient times and are found in all the ancient cultures. Woven into story telling, myths and artworks, laid out as walking patterns on the floors of churches and coastlines, the labyrinth is dominant in our distant past.
The maze came along later, when we left our more feminine and labyrinthial way of being and started aligning ourselves with the masculine polarity, developing our minds and our thinking and leaving behind our knowing. Our modern patriarchal society is based on thinking. We have developed our intellect and our lives on this planet in incredible ways, but the balance is out and we have come to a dead end. It is time for us to reclaim a more feminine and infinite way of being and bring back the collective heart.

This is where the labyrinth comes in, and is most likely why Labyrinths are being built at an amazing rate all over the world today. It offers us a wordless space and subliminal message, talking directly to the infinite and wordlessness in us. Like a map, left by our ancient selves, to help us find our way back to our hearts and inner knowledge.

There is no right or wrong way to walk a Labyrinth. The space is there to bring insight and balance to the user. Children especially love to run, dance and play on a labyrinth, this is natural and right for them as they live differently in their bodies to adults and have a natural openness to spirit. However, reverence for the space is important, so this we need to instill in the children, not by lecturing, which is maze like, but by showing. A wonderful way to explain to children about things is through stories, as stories, especially ancient mythical or archetypal stories speak directly to the Childs higher knowing.
